Red Wings dominate Jets as AHL Moose stun Detroit Griffins in unexpected upset

The past weekend proved to be a challenging one for the Winnipeg Jets at the NHL level, especially with a decisive 5-1 defeat to the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night, highlighting Detroit’s strong performance this season. However, their AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose, demonstrated that there’s still plenty for the organization to celebrate. The Moose took on Detroit’s AHL team, the Grand Rapids Griffins, in a two-game series that told a contrasting story.

Ahead of the series, the Moose were considered underdogs against the formidable Griffins, who have set records with the best start in AHL history and a streak of 17 consecutive road points. In their opening match on Friday, Manitoba pushed the Griffins hard, with the game remaining tied through the first two periods before Grand Rapids secured a 2-1 win in the third. Despite this loss, the Moose showed they can compete at a high level.

On Sunday, the game was again tightly contested, with the Griffins leading 2-1 entering the third period. Manitoba staged a dramatic comeback, scoring a game-winning goal with under 30 seconds remaining from prospect Brad Lambert, followed by two more goals in the final minute. This upset ended Grand Rapids’ record streak of 17 straight road points but did little to diminish their overall dominance, as they still lead the league with an impressive record of 32 wins, 4 losses, 2 ties, and 1 overtime loss.

For Manitoba, this victory meant more than just two points; it’s a sign of their resilience and upward momentum, as they have now won three of their last four games and sit third in the Central Division with a 20-15-3 record. With upcoming home games against the Rockford IceHogs, this win provides a boost of confidence as the team prepares for crucial matchups.

While the Jets struggled at the NHL level against Detroit, their AHL affiliate’s performance demonstrates that the organization’s future remains bright and promising for hockey fans tuning into prospects and farm team success.

Fan Take: This series highlights the depth and promising talent within the Jets organization, providing hope for future NHL success. It reminds fans that even in tough NHL nights, the development pipeline is thriving and could be key to sustained team competitiveness in the years ahead.
