  • Is it worth the gamble for Sheffield United?
  • Phillips needs a fresh start after staying at Man City

Sheffield United are close to bringing Kalvin Phillips back to Bramall Lane, with preliminary talks taking place with Manchester City over a new loan deal.

According to Football Insider, the Blades are working to finalize a new deal with the 30-year-old England midfielder following his previous spell in South Yorkshire.

Phillips joined Sheffield United on loan in February, but his time on the pitch was limited as his season was interrupted by a knee injury.

Still, the fact that United are pushing for his return shows how highly Chris Wilder still thinks of him.

Is it worth the gamble for Sheffield United?

From Sheffield United’s point of view, this is not a flashy deal, but a calculated risk.

It hasn’t been an easy few years for Phillips since leaving Leeds United for Man City in 2022. He struggled to play regular football under manager Josep Guardiola and was unable to fully rebuild his rhythm during his loan spell from the Etihad.

But there are still players out there. At his best, Phillips provides control, defensive discipline and leadership in midfield. Exactly the type of profile Sheffield United could use if they want to push for stronger promotion.

ESPN also reported in early June that the Blades were interested in re-signing him, which was clearly a long-standing goal rather than a sudden move.

For City, another loan would make sense if Phillips is not in the first team’s plans.

The deal could be a smart one for Sheffield United if the financial terms are right and his fitness is checked.

Although nothing is officially completed, negotiations appear to be moving in a positive direction.

If Phillips can stay healthy, this could be a low-risk, high-upside deal that provides much-needed reinforcement to the Blades’ midfield.
