Fabrizio Romano: Man City target Geronimo Lulli to replace James Trafford

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester City are targeting Olympique de Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Lulli to fill the vacancy at Trafford.

Romano writes of X:

“Exclusive: Manchester City want Geronimo Lulli as their new reserve goalkeeper to replace James Trafford. We understand that the Argentine goalkeeper is keen on the move. Olympique de Marseille are also aware of the interest and #MCFC are in favor of it.”

With James Trafford’s move to Leeds United looming, a quality shot-stopper is City’s immediate priority.

Lulli’s desire to move will give the English side a major boost in negotiations as they aim to reach an agreement with Marseille.

Lulli’s first spell at Manchester City was a failure.

Lulli’s transfer will be a remarkable first-round moment in his career.

The Argentine goalkeeper joined Manchester City from Deportivo Maldonado in the summer of 2016 after impressing during a two-year loan spell at Real Sociedad.

However, despite joining shortly after Josep Guardiola took over as manager, Rulli never featured in a game for City.

Instead, he was immediately loaned back to Real Sociedad as part of a pre-arranged deal, allowing him to continue his development in La Liga.

Just a few months later, in January 2017, Real Sociedad completed the goalkeeper’s permanent transfer, ending his short spell as a City player before it really began.

Now, almost a decade after his first arrival, Manchester City are actively working to bring Lulli back to complete unfinished business at the club.

Since leaving England, the 34-year-old has forged an impressive career, enjoying spells with Real Sociedad, Villarreal, Ajax and Marseille, while winning major accolades including the UEFA Europa League and the FIFA World Cup with Argentina.
