Buzzard, who grew up playing football, believed a past injury had ended his playing days in the 1990s. Over the years, he embraced a new role as a pastor and a devoted father to three children.
Inspired by a video his son shared showing a 60-year-old playing football on the East Coast, Buzzard decided to get back in shape and contacted a coach at San Jose City College. Although the coaching staff may have initially been skeptical about his serious intentions, Buzzard’s efforts were enough to earn him a place on the regular-season roster.
In an interview with “Fox & Friends,” Buzzard expressed his determination, stating, “No one’s going easy at all, and I’m not going easy on them. I’m giving them everything I’ve got, too. My teammates have been great and have really embraced me. I wondered how they would react to a 47-year-old joining them—whether they would accept me or treat me differently. They have been incredible.”
The only hesitation came from his wife, who initially expressed concern for his safety, saying she hoped he would make the team but preferred he avoid playing in games. However, she has since come around, marking every game on her calendar to show her support.
Buzzard has been sharing a powerful message throughout his journey: “Risk or rust. You’re either risking or you’re rusting as a man. Take risks. Don’t rust.”
San Jose City College is set to kick off its 2026 season at home against the College of the Redwoods this Saturday.
