Luis Enrique Honors Late Daughter Xana Following PSG’s UCL Victory: “Her Spirit Is With Us.”

When Paris Saint-Germain celebrated their first UEFA Champions League final at Munich’s Allianz Arena, one significant presence was that of Xana, the late daughter of manager Luis Enrique. Xana lost her battle with osteosarcoma, a rare bone cancer, in 2019, but her memory continues to profoundly impact Enrique and his family. Throughout his career, Enrique honors her in important moments, including the recent Champions League final, where tributes to Xana were evident during PSG’s victory celebrations.

Enrique wore a plain black t-shirt for the match, which he later changed to a commemorative shirt showcasing the Xana Foundation, an organization established by him and his wife Elena Carell after their daughter’s passing. The design of the shirt referenced a cherished photograph of Xana taken during a Champions League final a decade ago, when Enrique’s previous team, Barcelona, triumphed in Berlin.

"I have amazing memories of my daughter who loved celebrations. She’s with us in spirit, and I hope to celebrate this moment in her honor," Enrique shared earlier this season. After PSG’s decisive 5-0 win over Inter, fans displayed banners featuring Xana’s photos, which Enrique appreciated deeply, stating, "It’s touching to remember her in such ways."

Following Spain’s match against Germany, also on Xana’s birthday, Enrique spoke of her significance: "We may not physically have her, but she’s part of our lives daily. It’s about cherishing those moments." In his documentary, he reflected on how the family keeps her memory alive, emphasizing the importance of discussing and reminiscing about her.

The Xana Foundation supports families of children with serious illnesses, reflecting Enrique and Carell’s commitment to giving back, as they were privileged to focus on their daughter during her illness. Enrique expressed gratitude for the time they shared, saying, “I feel lucky to have had her for nine years.”

Fan Take: This story resonates deeply with soccer fans, highlighting the emotional journeys that intertwine sports and personal life. Enrique’s ability to honor his daughter while achieving monumental success demonstrates the human side of sports, reminding fans that beyond the competition lies profound personal resilience and familial love.
