Manny Pacquiao’s journey in boxing is far from over as he prepares to come out of retirement at 46 for another title chase next month. Regardless of the outcome, his career achievements are already legendary, culminating in his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame this past Sunday.

Reflecting on his career during the celebration at Turnstone Casino in Verona, New York, Pacquiao—the headline inductee for the 2025 class—didn’t dwell on his upcoming fight but highlighted his record-breaking success of winning titles across eight weight divisions. Starting as a professional fighter in the 106-pound category, he climbed to win championships up to the 154-pound division.

“From flyweight to junior middleweight, eight divisions,” Pacquiao said. “Every fight, every win was a step out of poverty. It was not only for me, but for my family and for the Filipino people.”

The hall of fame class also honored other notable fighters, such as Vinny Pazienza—who overcame a traumatic car accident to resume boxing. Women inductees included Yessica Chavez, Anne Sophie Mathis, Mary Jo Sanders, and Cathy “Cat” Davis, who was among the first women granted a professional boxing license in 1978.

Officials and contributors like referee Kenny Bayless, who oversaw many of Pacquiao’s biggest bouts including his knockouts over Floyd Mayweather and Ricky Hatton, along with Harry Gibbs, Cut Man Al Gavin, broadcaster Randy Gordon, HBO producer Ross Greenberg, and late fighters Rodrigo Valdes and Owen Swift, were also celebrated.

Pacquiao retired in 2021 holding a 62-8-2 record with 39 knockouts, having fought in some of the 2000s’ biggest matches. He always sought the toughest opponents to challenge himself. Born into poverty in the Philippines, his boxing success brought him immense wealth and visibility, leading him to serve as a senator from 2016 to 2022 and even run for president. He expressed gratitude to his supporters while reflecting emotionally on his journey.

“This is our victory,” Pacquiao said. “This is our story, and the best hasn’t come yet.”

Fan Take: Pacquiao’s return is thrilling news for fight fans because it represents the enduring spirit and passion that defines boxing’s greatest champions. His comeback could inspire a new chapter in the sport, raising excitement and drawing attention to the global appeal of boxing.
