The Medicine Hat Tigers are on the verge of achieving something they haven’t in their 11-year history—bringing the Memorial Cup Trophy to the Western Hockey League. However, this isn’t their first time vying for the title. The Tigers previously won championships in 1987 and 1988, defeating Oshawa Generals and Windsor Spitfires, respectively.

Since those victories, the Tigers have made one more bid for the cup, but things didn’t go as planned. In 2007, after a thrilling seven-game WHL Championship series win over the Vancouver Giants, Medicine Hat headed to the Memorial Cup held in Vancouver. Despite beating the Giants 1-0 in their round-robin game, Vancouver ultimately triumphed, defeating the Tigers 3-1 in the semifinals and taking home the title.

Nearly two decades later, head coach Willie Desjardins, who has recently surpassed 500 coaching wins, is eager to lead the Tigers once again to championship glory. With several NHL-drafted players and more prospects emerging, Medicine Hat is prepared to challenge powerhouse London Knights, who have been dominant in the OHL.
