Steelers Eye Adding Dynamic Playmaker to Boost New QB Aaron Rodgers, Sources Say

Aaron Rodgers arrived at the Pittsburgh Steelers’ facility on Saturday morning. Although the Steelers have secured a new quarterback, they are reportedly still looking for a dynamic playmaker to boost Rodgers’ chances of success in the 2025 season. Shortly after Rodgers’ decision to join Pittsburgh, NFL insider Ian Rapoport expressed hope that the Steelers would continue their search for at least another week. He disclosed that general manager Omar Khan had recently reached out to multiple free agents and players currently on other teams.

Rapoport confirmed that the Steelers contacted the Miami Dolphins about Pro Bowl tight end John Smith and the Atlanta Falcons regarding Kyle Pitts, their starting tight end and former first-round pick, who has been the subject of recent trade rumors. The Steelers also had veteran wide receiver Gabe Davis visit their facility, but no deal was reached due to Davis’ ongoing recovery from a torn meniscus that cut short his 2024 season. It’s likely Davis remains unsigned this offseason because of his injury rehab.

Another experienced playmaker linked to the Steelers is Jets wide receiver Allen Lazard, who previously played alongside Rodgers in Green Bay and New York. At 29, Lazard, an undrafted player, has a knack for finding the end zone, recording six touchdowns in 2024—marking the third time in four years he has reached that mark. Currently, Pittsburgh boasts a solid group of skill players, led by two-time Pro Bowler DK Metcalf. Alongside Metcalf, the team has a strong starting tight end and a complementary receiving corps featuring running backs Calvin Austin III and Pat Freyelmuto, as well as Jalen Warren and rookie Caleb Johnson.

However, after trading George Pickens to Dallas, it’s clear the Steelers intend to add another proven playmaker to strengthen their offense going forward.

Fan Take: This news is significant for NFL fans because it shows the Steelers’ commitment to building a competitive team around Aaron Rodgers, a legendary quarterback looking for a late-career resurgence. Adding key playmakers could not only transform Pittsburgh’s offense but also shake up the dynamics of the AFC in 2025, creating an exciting season ahead.
