Cristiano Ronaldo celebrated another achievement as he shed tears of joy following Portugal’s victory over Spain on Sunday. He played a pivotal role, scoring to equalize the match at 2-2, before his teammates secured the win in the penalty shootout with a score of 5-3.

“I have a host of titles in club football, but nothing compares to winning with Portugal,” Ronaldo expressed. “These tears reflect our success, and it brings me immense happiness.”

At 40 years old, Ronaldo entered the field for warm-ups, drawing a thunderous cheer from his fans. Though many captured the moment on their phones, he acknowledged that his playing days are numbered. Just three days earlier, he assisted in leading Portugal to their first win against Germany in 25 years, finishing the semi-finals of the Nations League with a score of 2-1.

Initially, the match against Spain proved challenging, with Ronaldo’s opportunities curtailed by determined Spanish defenders. After falling behind 2-1, Nuno Mendes equalized for Portugal before Ronaldo netted his 138th international goal in the 61st minute, igniting celebrations among his devoted supporters. Despite aiming to extend his record of 221 appearances for his country, he was substituted in the 88th minute to a standing ovation, receiving applause from fans and a warm embrace from coach Roberto Martinez.

Post-match, Ronaldo admitted to feeling injured, stating, “I could sense it during warm-ups, and I had been feeling it for a while, but for the national team, I would have given everything—even breaking a leg—to achieve this trophy.”

Looking ahead, Ronaldo is set to participate in his sixth World Cup as Portugal secures a spot in the tournament co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the US next year. “This victory against Spain boosts our confidence as we prepare for the World Cup, proving we can compete with any team globally,” he mentioned.

As speculation surrounds his future, with his contract at Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr expiring at the end of June, he remarked that “nothing will change” regarding his club situation. He also turned down “considerable offers” to participate in the Club World Cup despite receiving invitations.

Regardless of where he plays, Ronaldo remains committed to the Portuguese national team. “I’ve played in many countries and for various clubs, but playing for Portugal always holds a special significance for me,” he affirmed.

This news is significant for soccer fans as it highlights not just Ronaldo’s continued relevance in the sport but also the potential for an exciting World Cup. His unwavering dedication and remarkable talent keep the hopes of Portuguese fans alive, making each match an electrifying event.
