Chicago Sky Faces Stunning Setback Following Crushing Defeat by Indiana Fever

The Chicago Sky made a heartbreaking announcement following their tough defeat against the Indiana Fever, as initially reported by Athlon Sports. After a week off, the Sky came back on Saturday night but struggled, losing 79-52 without key players Kate Rinkler and Sophie Cunningham. The game took a turn when veteran guard Courtney Vandersloot, a crucial leader and contributor to the young team, sustained an injury in the first half.

After an MRI on Sunday, the team confirmed that Vandersloot suffered a season-ending ACL tear. The Sky shared on social media: “Courtney Vandersloot underwent an MRI yesterday which revealed an ACL injury on her right knee. We’re all behind you, Courtney.”

At 36 years old, Vandersloot has been a cornerstone for Chicago, becoming the franchise’s all-time leading scorer during the first two weeks of the 2025 WNBA season. She was vital in leading the Sky to their inaugural WNBA championship in 2021. After two seasons with the New York Liberty, she returned to Chicago this offseason on a one-year deal and secured her second career title last year.

Through seven games this season, with the Sky holding a 2-5 record, Vandersloot averaged 10.6 points, 5.3 assists, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game, marking the end of her 15th WNBA season.

Fan Take: This injury is a massive blow not only for the Chicago Sky but also for WNBA fans who admire Vandersloot’s leadership and skill on the court. Her absence will challenge the team’s dynamics and showcases how crucial veteran presence is in shaping competitive and inspiring women’s basketball.
