The Miami Heat dominated early, jumping to a 15-0 lead against the Orlando Magic in Tuesday night’s quarterfinals of the NBA Cup. However, as often happens with large leads in the NBA, their advantage didn’t last. Desmond Bane’s scoring surge helped the Magic rally, giving them their first lead at 47-46 before halftime. By the fourth quarter, the Magic were in control and secured a 117-108 victory.

With this win, the Magic moved on to the NBA Cup semifinals, where they will face the winner of Tuesday’s clash between the New York Knicks and Toronto Raptors.

After a slow start, Bane exploded for 37 points, six rebounds, and five assists, marking his best shooting game since joining the Magic. He shot 14-of-24 from the field and 6-of-9 from three-point range. His 10 points in the second quarter sparked the Magic’s rally, and his clutch shooting after halftime kept the Heat at bay. This was Bane’s third 37-point game in the last six contests following a rocky start to his tenure with Orlando.

The Magic relied heavily on Bane due to injuries sidelining key players. All-Star Paolo Banchero returned from a groin strain to score 18 points with seven rebounds and four assists, but star forward Franz Wagner was out with an ankle sprain and expected to miss several weeks. Despite these setbacks, the Magic have started strong, standing fourth in the Eastern Conference with a 15-10 record as of Tuesday, positioning themselves well in the NBA Cup race. Bane’s sustained performance will be vital for their continued success.

By advancing to the semifinals, each full-time Magic player earned $106,187, with rewards increasing in subsequent rounds. The championship-winning team stands to earn $530,933, a significant bonus, especially for players earning the league’s minimum salary of $1.366 million.

Fan Take: This victory highlights Desmond Bane’s rise as a key player, showing how an emerging star can reshape a team’s fortunes. For basketball fans, the Magic’s resilience and potential upset over powerhouse teams keep the NBA Cup thrilling and unpredictable, adding excitement to the sport’s future.
