R&A announced on Monday that it will be holding on-site qualifying for the final spot of Royal Burkdale’s Open Championship Field starting next year.

In response to a survey of fans who said they wanted more live golf, R&A will debut in 2026 in what they call “the winner’s last and last qualifiers” on Monday of Tournament Week.

R&A will also host the Heroes Classic on Tuesday at Tournament Week, featuring many past championships and special guests.

As with Monday’s qualifying for regular PGA Tour events, the 18-hole shootout adds to other roads in the open. The final qualifying round for this year’s opening will be held on Tuesday at four sites around the UK.

Mark Darbon, CEO of R&a, said:

“As a result, we introduced new features that we believe will boost fan opening, especially on the day leading up to the championship.
