Hernández: Will LeBron James Be the Key to Turning the Wild Dian Ayton into a Reliable Center?

The Lakers have secured their new starting center without giving up on Austin Reaves, opting instead to acquire Deandre Ayton. Despite Ayton’s undeniable talent, he has faced criticism for his inconsistent effort, lackluster defense, questionable motivation, and struggles with maintaining his health. Unlike Anthony Davis, who was always accountable, Ayton has openly admitted to feeling there’s nothing left to prove in the NBA.

Recently, the Portland Trail Blazers waived Ayton’s contract, allowing the Lakers to pick him up at a low cost, a gamble they hope will reignite his potential. Physically and skill-wise, Ayton fits what the Lakers need, but it remains uncertain if he can ignite a new drive at 27 years old—something that rarely happens for players at this stage of their career.

Fortunately, the Lakers still have LeBron James, who at 40 continues to lead by example with his unmatched work ethic and dedication. James could be the key figure to inspire and mentor Ayton to elevate his game. The Lakers, though trailing top Western Conference teams like the Nuggets and Timberwolves, are relying on Ayton to surpass his previous performance averages of 16.4 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.

Ayton’s most successful season came when he played alongside veteran Chris Paul with the Suns, reaching the NBA Finals in 2021. This experience showed how valuable a strong veteran presence can be for Ayton’s development. If Ayton can consistently show up and harness his skills, especially with playmakers like Donsic and the guidance of LeBron, he could rewrite the story of his career and contribute to the Lakers’ championship goals.

Fan Take: This signing is a pivotal moment for the Lakers and basketball fans alike because it blends potential with veteran leadership—a combination that has fueled dynasties in the past. If Ayton can rise to the challenge under LeBron’s mentorship, it could not only reshape the Lakers’ future but also remind us how transformative the right environment and guidance are for young stars in the NBA.
