Diogo Jota, a forward for Liverpool and the Portuguese national team, tragically passed away in a car accident in Spain, as confirmed by the Portuguese Football Federation. He was just 28 years old.

The club released a heartfelt statement:

“Liverpool Football Club is heartbroken by the loss of Diogo Jota. We have learned that he and his brother, Andre, both aged 28, perished in a traffic accident in Spain. At this time, the club has no further comments and requests privacy for the families of Diogo and Andre. We will provide all necessary support.”

According to Spanish news agency EFE, the brothers lost their lives on the Rias Bajas Expressway near Palacios de Sanabria in Zamora, located in northwest Spain. Notably, Jota had just celebrated his wedding two weeks prior.

“The Portuguese Football Federation and the entire Portuguese football community are devastated by the news of Diogo Jota’s and Andre Silva’s deaths,” stated Dr. Pedro Proca from the Portuguese FA.

Jota joined Liverpool in September 2020 after transferring from Wolverhampton for around $40 million. Since then, he scored 65 goals in 182 matches across all competitions and played a pivotal role in winning the Premier League in the 2024-25 season and two UEFA Nations League titles with Portugal.

“The unexpected and tragic news of Diogo Jota’s passing, a player who has significantly uplifted the Portuguese name, fills me with profound sadness for his family. This is a sorrowful day for both football and sports locally and globally.”

CBS Sports will provide more updates as they arise.
