Emotional Tribute by Raul Jimenez
Mexican striker Raul Jimenez paid heartfelt tribute to his late teammate, Diogo Jota, during the Concacaf Gold Cup final at NRG Stadium in Houston on Sunday. Before the match began, Jimenez walked onto the field wearing a Mexican jersey emblazoned with “Diogo J,” honoring his former Portuguese teammate from their time together at Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League.
Jota, aged 28, and his brother Andre, 25, tragically lost their lives in a car accident in Spain when their Lamborghini caught fire after veering off the road, as reported by police on Thursday. Reflecting on his friendship with Jota, Jimenez shared, "He was a great friend who stood by me during our time at Wolves. We shared many wonderful moments while pursuing our goals."
Jimenez commemorated Jota after scoring the equalizer for Mexico against the United States in the 27th minute, taking a moment to celebrate by mimicking Jota’s signature celebration and draping a personalized jersey with Jota’s name over his crossed legs.
Similarly, Paris Saint-Germain’s Ousmane Dembele also honored Jota following the FIFA Club World Cup.
Explaining the Celebration
Diogo Jota was not only a passionate fan of EA Sports FC (formerly known as FIFA) but also an exceptional player. In April 2020, he achieved an impressive 30-0 record in Fut Champions, a top-tier competition in EA Sports FC, which ranked him among the world’s elite players.
In 2022, Jota also participated in the FIFA Global Series Qualifiers, one of the most competitive FIFA tournaments in Europe, although he lost to the 2017 world champion early in his participation. Furthermore, he became the owner of Galaxy Racer, an esports team, which later merged with his own team, leading to the formation of Luna Sports. Under this new team name, Luna Sports won the FC 24 eSports World Cup the previous year.
This news holds significance for soccer fans as it not only highlights the vulnerability of players off the field but also showcases the community’s solidarity in honoring those we lose. As esports continues to intersect with traditional sports, figures like Jota inspire a new generation of athletes in both areas.
