Schoen Vanges Bergen Creates History with Chicagona Scar Cup Triumph

Shane Van Gisbergen continues to be a dominant force on the Chicago street circuit, having competed five times across Xfinity and Cup series, winning four races. His only loss in this stretch was the 2024 Cup race, where he suffered a major setback. With his latest win, Van Gisbergen has joined the ranks of multiple race winners this season alongside Denny Hamlin, Kyle Larson, and Christopher Bell, making him the top winner for Trackhouse Racing this year. Rothshtein has secured one win (Cola 600), while Daniel Suarez has yet to claim a victory.

This recent triumph carries historical significance as well. Since his 2023 debut in Chicago, Van Gisbergen captured his first Cup win in Mexico City earlier this year and added another victory in Chicago, becoming the most successful foreign-born driver in NASCAR Cup Series history. Before him, Juan Pablo Montoya, Daniel Suarez, and Marcos Ambrose each had two wins. As a rookie, Van Gisbergen is in contention for Rookie of the Year, boasting two wins this season—a feat unseen since Denny Hamlin’s rookie year in 2006, who also won twice. Additionally, Van Gisbergen’s win pace rivals Tony Stewart’s rookie season in 1999.

In terms of pace, Van Gisbergen’s ability recalls Jimmie Johnson’s early dominance, with three wins in just 33 starts—a level of success not seen since Johnson’s three wins in his first 16 starts back in 2002. Furthermore, Van Gisbergen achieved a rare weekend sweep last weekend by clinching pole position and victory in both Saturday’s Xfinity race and Sunday’s Cup race, a feat only previously accomplished by Kyle Busch in 2016.

Fan Take: Shane Van Gisbergen’s meteoric rise and remarkable success on road and street courses inject exciting new energy into NASCAR, highlighting the growing international talent in the sport. His dominance signals a fresh challenge for established drivers and could inspire more global competitors to enter NASCAR, broadening the sport’s appeal and competitiveness.
