Brewers’ Baseman Lewis Hoskins Out for Six Weeks Due to Left Thumb UCL Sprain

Lewis Hoskins, the first baseman for the Milwaukee Brewers, announced on Tuesday that an MRI confirmed he has a UCL sprain in his left thumb, which will sideline him for approximately six weeks. Hoskins sustained the injury last Saturday during a game against the Miami Marlins, which Milwaukee lost 4-2.

Despite the setback, Hoskins plans to stay focused and support his team off the field as they aim for a playoff spot. He mentioned that he will spend a few weeks in rehab before gradually resuming baseball activities once his thumb has strengthened.

The 32-year-old player felt pain during the fourth inning of the game after making a remarkable defensive play—getting off the base, catching an errant throw from Marlins shortstop Joey Ortiz, and tagging out runner Eric Waggaman. Although Hoskins was examined by a team doctor after the play, he returned to finish the inning before being substituted by Jake Bowers in the fifth.

Reflecting on the incident, Hoskins acknowledged the difficulty of making a safer tag given the timing, but said that it’s simply part of the game and his position on the field. Currently, the Brewers sit 3.5 games behind the division-leading Chicago Cubs, holding a 51-40 record in the NL Central.

Fan Take: This injury is a blow to the Brewers at a critical time in the season, as Hoskins is a key contributor both offensively and defensively. Baseball fans should watch closely to see how the team adapts without him and whether this impacts the Brewers’ race for the playoffs.
