Is Detroit positioning itself to land pending free agent Martin Neka?

An insider report suggests that the Colorado Avalanche may be uncertain about re-signing Martin Nekas and could consider trading him. The 2026 NHL free agent class is expected to be one of the largest and most significant in history, featuring many top players. Unlike recent years when star players tended to re-sign with their teams, this upcoming class could lead to major changes across the league.

Many hockey fans are eagerly anticipating the potential availability of stars like Connor McDavid, Jack Eichel, and Artemi Panarin, hoping their teams can acquire some of the league’s best talent. Martin Nekas, a key player for the Avalanche, is seen as crucial to their future plans. At 26, the winger has developed into a consistent scorer, capable of putting up 70-80 points per season, and his physical presence on the ice has earned him the nickname "skate horse," reminiscent of tough players like Ryan Whitney.

Drafted 12th overall in 2017, Nekas has proven his ability to perform in high-pressure situations, with notable playoff performances in 2019 and the recent postseason. Currently in the final year of his two-year bridge contract with a manageable $6.5 million cap hit, Nekas could be attractive trade bait for the Avalanche to gain draft picks or prospects, especially since the team recently traded Miles Wood and Charlie Coyle for additional draft assets.

Detroit Red Wings fans have reason to watch Nekas closely. The Wings, with solid young right wings like Lucas Raymond and Alex DeBrincat, could use a top-six winger to boost their offense immediately and also benefit from his youth for long-term success. Nekas’s next contract could be in the $8-9 million range, fitting within Detroit’s cap structure. He would have the chance to play alongside some of the league’s best players in Colorado or take on a significant role with Detroit, a team on the rise.

Fan Take: This potential move highlights the strategic decisions NHL teams must make in balancing player retention and asset management. For hockey fans, it signals an exciting offseason ahead that could reshape team dynamics and intensify competition across the league.
