NBA Analysts Crown New York Knicks and Toronto Raptors as Premier Trade Allies for LA Lakers’ Star Players

NBA analysts have focused on the potential trade of an LA Lakers star following the team’s first-round playoff exit to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Lakers face a critical offseason, especially with uncertainty surrounding LeBron James’ future after he opted into his contract. Luka Doncic is approaching eligibility for the Maximum Extension, which could complicate contract negotiations. Among the key players under consideration is Austin Reaves, who had a standout season but has yet to secure his long-term spot with the team.

Reaves declined a four-year, $90 million offer from the Lakers, betting on a bigger payday if he signs an extension next year. However, this high cost could make him a potential trade candidate. Chris Mannix highlighted that despite Reaves’ talent, his role overlaps with Luka Doncic’s, making him somewhat redundant on the current roster. Mannix also suggested that teams like the Toronto Raptors and New York Knicks may be interested in acquiring Reaves, as their rosters could benefit from his skill set. The Knicks, led by Mike Brown, are looking to diversify, and Toronto has assets that could work well in a trade involving Reaves.

Reaves joined the Lakers as an undrafted free agent and quickly became a valuable player, contributing significantly in their playoff run last year. The 2024-25 season marked his best performance yet, averaging 20 points per game and stepping up when key players James and Doncic were unavailable. Doncic himself has praised Reaves, enjoying their on-court collaboration. With rumors suggesting James might leave LA, the Lakers will need players like Reaves to support Doncic moving forward. Although not a superstar, Reaves has the potential to be a crucial player for the Lakers’ future success.

Fan Take: This news is significant for basketball fans because it highlights the Lakers’ ongoing roster evolution and strategy in building a championship-contending team.
