Chloe Kelly successfully defended the title she claimed three years ago as England triumphed over Euro 2025 on Sunday, clinching victory in a tense 3-1 penalty shootout.

It was yet another thrilling performance from Sarina Wiegman’s team. They made a remarkable comeback from two goals down, defeating Sweden in the quarter-finals and Italy in the semi-finals, with Kelly scoring another pivotal extra-time goal.

The reigning World and Nations League champions, Spain, struck first in the 25th minute when Mariona Caldentai took advantage of a lapse in England’s defense, slipping the ball past goalkeeper Hanna Hampton.

England faced challenges as Lauren James battled an ankle injury, but Kelly stepped in just before halftime, proving to be a key substitution.

Kelly bolstered England’s left side, and in the 57th minute, Alesia Russo delivered a perfect cross, allowing Kelly to score and level the match.

Despite Spain’s ball dominance, they failed to secure another goal before regulation time ended, with the match continuing into extra time where they couldn’t penetrate the strong English defense, resulting in a 1-1 draw.

Spain had a strong start when goalkeeper Kata Kor denied Beth Mead’s attempt, but England’s Hanna Hampton came up big by saving shots from Caldente and Aitana Bonmaty, giving England the advantage.

Kor also stopped Leah Williamson’s attempt, but Salma Paraluelo missed badly from the spot, keeping England’s hopes alive.

This match marked a continuation of Kelly’s heroics, reminiscent of her title-winning moment at Wembley in 2022.

She converted the decisive penalty, joyfully celebrating with her teammates in front of the English supporters.

“I’m incredibly proud of this team and honored to wear this badge. I’m thrilled to represent England… I felt calm and knew I had to score,” Kelly stated.

This final marked the first time England had lost to Sweden since their inaugural meeting in 1984, and the match was ultimately decided by penalties.

“It’s incredible how we’ve fought back throughout this tournament, showing our resilience,” said a buoyant Hampton.

“We have English grit, and we never give up—today was proof of that.”

For Spain’s Bonmati, the defeat was a hard pill to swallow.

“Honestly, I’m out of emotions. We’re all exhausted,” she admitted. “I feel responsible for the penalty miss. Congratulations to England; they played excellently.”

Fan Take: This victory is monumental for England, as it showcases their resilience and growth on the international stage, thrilling fans and solidifying their reputation in women’s soccer. It also emphasizes the increasing competition in the women’s game, raising excitement for future tournaments.
