MONTREAL – Two-time defending champion Jessica Pegra was eliminated in the third round of the National Bank Open after a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 loss to Anastasya Sevastova on Friday.

Sebastova, 35, from Latvia, ranked 11th in 2018 but fell to 386th, but defeated third-seeded Pegra six times with 10 chances.

The loss followed by fourth-placed Pegra, who won the opening game in Montreal over Greece’s Maria Saccari, but ended Wimbledon and the DC Open after a single game in July.

Sebastova will win 6-2, 6-4 with Latvian 22nd seed Jelena Ostapenko before moving on to the fourth round, facing Osaka’s Naomi.

Osaka, a former No. 1 player from Japan, hit five aces and converted six of his nine breakpoint opportunities to win the match in an hour and 12 minutes.

In other daytime results, Danish 16-seeded Clara Towson scored a 6-3, 6-0 third-round victory over Ukraine’s Yulyastadubtusueva.

The tournament’s second seed, Wimbledon champion Iga Sweet, found the evening session. She was scheduled to face German Everly in action in the third round.
