Auction Spotlight: TaylorMade Sales Agency Presents Hip 141, Charlatan Colt, at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale

TaylorMade Sales Agency showcased Hip 141, a colt by Charlatan and part of Juddmonte Farms’ esteemed lineage, during Tuesday’s Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale. This New York-bred colt is the fourth foal from Lady Marlah Clyse, who has previously been bred to notable stallions like American Pharoah, Justify, and Huring Candy. Currently, she is bred to defend Forte for the 2026 breeding season.

Though still early in her breeding career, Lady Marlah Clyse’s female family carries black-type quality. The second dam, Tare Green (by Giant’s Causeway), is the dam of French stakes winner Ocean Atlantic (by American Pharoah). The female line traces back to Juddmonte’s Third Dam, Dissemblé (by Ajonoran), influential in both hemispheres with champions like Leroydensanimoo and successes in Brazilian Group stakes.

Dissemblé is a sister to Hasili (by Kahyasi), one of Juddmonte’s most notable broodmares and the 2006 British Broodmare of the Year, who produced world-class racers including Champs Elysees, Banks Hill, Intercontinental, and Dansili.

Charlatan, a son of multiple Grade 1 winner Speightstown, has promising 2-year-old runners on the track. His standout progeny, Queen Bay, debuted impressively at Santa Anita with a 2 1/4 length victory under trainer Simon Callahan. During the most recent auction season, Charlatan’s median sales price of $175,000 for 41 horses was the highest among all freshman sires in 2025. This price suggests his offspring are a reliable investment for pinhook buyers.

Currently, Charlatan’s 2-year-olds are showing strong morning workouts, with 36 covering a half-mile briskly, and their average sales price reaching $262,000.

Charlatan was dominant on the racetrack, winning four of his five starts and earning over $4 million. He debuted with a commanding 5 3/4-length victory in a 6-furlong maiden special weight at Santa Anita, then followed up with a ten-length allowance win. He triumphed in the Grade 1 Arkansas Derby by six lengths and capped his sophomore season by winning the Malibu Stakes by 4 1/2 lengths. His only defeat came in the Grade 1 Saudi Arabian Cup, where he placed second to global star Mishriff.

Speightstown is a top North American sire, respected for attracting quality mares including Munnings, Olympiad, and Prince of Monaco. His influence as a broodmare sire extends globally, with successful progeny across the US, Australia, and Asia. Notable broodmare sire descendants include champions Legal Glory, Mr. Hustle, Shinzo, and multiple Grade 1 winners like Structor, Aspen Gloves, and Curls Packler.

Hip 141, being a New York-bred, benefits from the Empire State’s generous breeding incentives, including eligibility for the Open Owner Award, which offers a 10% bonus on purse earnings for horses bred in New York but sired by out-of-state stallions. These incentives make investing in New York-based horses, like Hip 141, a potentially lucrative option.

This colt is offered by TaylorMade Sales Agency at Barn 10 during the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale.

Fan Take:
This report highlights not just the promising bloodlines behind Hip 141 but also underlines the strategic advantage of breeding incentives in New York, which can make a major difference for owners and buyers. For horse racing fans, this signals the ongoing importance of strong pedigrees combined with smart breeding programs to keep the sport vibrant and competitive.
