Jen Paul made history as the first female umpire to officiate a regular-season game in Major League Baseball. Her much-anticipated debut took place during the first game of Saturday’s split doubleheader between the Atlanta Braves and the Miami Marlins. Paul had a quiet first inning, overseeing plays without controversy as Braves pitcher Hurston Waldrep hit two batters and Marlins pitcher Ryan Gusto handled the Braves’ side without calls from Paul. Serving as the first-base umpire, her duties included checking for foreign objects after innings, during which she received a warm greeting from Braves catcher Sean Murphy.

Paul’s first significant call came in the third inning when she ruled Braves catcher Sean Murphy safe in a close play, a decision that was not challenged by Marlins manager Clayton McCullough. She also displayed animated calls, notably signaling an out during a double play involving Miami’s Xavier Edwards. Throughout the game, Paul’s on-field presence was highlighted by the videoboard, evoking warm applause from the fans.

Paul is set to work third base in the night game of the doubleheader and will be behind home plate for the series finale on Sunday. Her debut attracted considerable attention with many photographers present as officials entered the field. Pre-game, she was warmly welcomed by team coaches and stepped confidently into her role.

The 48-year-old umpire from New Jersey has steadily risen through the ranks, starting in the minor leagues in 2016 and officiating the Triple-A Championship Game in 2023 along with spring training games. She was informed of her promotion shortly before the doubleheader and described the moment as emotionally overwhelming. Paul was a three-time All-Conference softball selection at Hofstra University and has officiated NCAA softball games from 2010 to 2016.

Paul’s historic MLB debut follows significant gender breaks in other sports, including the NBA and NFL, while the NHL has yet to feature women officials on the ice. This milestone signifies a progressive step towards gender diversity in professional baseball umpiring.

Fan Take: Jen Paul’s groundbreaking debut is a monumental moment for baseball, demonstrating the sport’s growing commitment to inclusivity and equality. Her presence on the field not only inspires future generations of female officials but also enriches the game’s culture by breaking down long-standing gender barriers.
