Charlie Hoffman has revealed his close friendship with Rory McIlroy, more than a year after he wrote a letter to PGA Tour members that appeared to be particularly critical of the Northern Irishman.

Brighter times seem to be ahead for the PGA Tour. LIV More than a question mark hangs over the future of golf. Those in Ponte Vedra now appear to hold nearly every card in the game’s civil wars.

But in the early stages of 2025, there was a lot more discussion about the best way for the PGA Tour to move forward.

Charlie Hoffman reflects on 2025 letter to PGA Tour members that indirectly criticized Rory McIlroy

Justin Thomas, Charlie Hoffman and others sent long letters to members. Hoffman’s letter threatened to cause further controversy, pointing out that star players who play on other tours won’t help the PGA Tour.

He pointed out that players cannot complain about how much they play while also competing in the DP World Tour and TGL.

The problem is that Rory McIlroy was the only player who ticked all the boxes on that front. Unsurprisingly, when asked about the letter from Hoffman after his TGL appearance, McIlroy felt the point was aimed squarely at him.

He didn’t seem particularly impressed.

Hoffman opened up on the Foreplay Podcast about his message to his fellow PGA Tour players and his subsequent relationship with McIlroy.

“Believe it or not, I think Rory and I have a very good relationship. I say what I think, and at the end of the day I think I’m very open-minded. It was very noticeable that a top player wants to play less, and that’s very unpleasant. They just want to get paid if they play. I don’t have a problem with that, by the way. I don’t have a problem with that,” he said.

“Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on the person, you don’t have to play any events on the PGA Tour. You don’t have to play a playoff event, you don’t have to play a signature event, you don’t have to play anything. But we’re looking for $20 million in sponsorship. You have to come.”

“So the group in Delaware said, we want to play less, we want to do this. And it’s like half the players want to play less, half the players want to play more. You can never satisfy all members, but people are like, this is why we’re doing this. And then when they start playing Race to Dubai, I don’t care, I’ll play in Australia for the Australian Open, the reality is, for the game of golf, it’s better to play.”It’s great that Rory has taken this game around the world, but it’s It’s not what’s best for the PGA Tour.

“So even though you’re sitting on the board representing the PGA Tour and you’re saying things like this, when you’re actually supporting the Aussie Tour and the DP Tour and all these other tours because you’ve got national sponsorships that need you locally, when you cancel events that you need to support, you’re not actually supporting the PGA Tour. So I just called it out.”

How PGA Tour players feel about how the product has changed since LIV Golf started

It will be interesting to see what the PGA Tour looks like over the next few years. It has already been announced that neither the Sentry nor the Sony Open in Hawaii will be on the future calendar in their current form.

This is a controversial step. And it also hints at some of the cruel decisions coming from Brian Rolup and the Future Competitions Committee.

Some people, especially those with ties to Hawaii, may not like this move. However, Hoffman indicated that he is very optimistic about the direction of the tour.

“Obviously, the TGL was a very strategic move by the PGA Tour. I don’t need to go too far into it, but the reason the TGL was created was to keep players in the country, not to play in LIV. It’s a league that was created so that you couldn’t join other leagues. That’s the reality of the TGL. And it’s another way to make money, which is great, and it’s another way to make money for the players,” he said.

“Frankly, we’ve made more money since LIV came out. It was good to be an independent golfer, an independent contractor in the game of golf. No matter which path you went, you made a lot of money. Those who stayed on the PGA Tour made more money. Those who went to LIV made more money. Everybody made more money. We’ve made some money. It’s kind of trimmed the fat on what direction we’re going to go. And you never know where we’re going to end up. And obviously there was a lot of buzz last week about what was going on, but I think the tour is better now than it was three years ago, four years ago.”

The PGA Tour certainly seems to be in a much stronger position than it was when LIV arrived in 2022.

And if they learn from the complacency that opened the door to breakaway leagues in the first place, there will be a lot to be very excited about on the PGA Tour.
