Coco Gough fires the coach before us, Matthew Daly confirms

Two-time major champion and now world number three Cocogoff fired manager Matthew Daly a few days before the start of the US.

Daly confirmed his firing with tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg on Wednesday. Daly has not yet responded to ESPN’s request for comment.

He told Rothenberg that it happened “recently” but it was postponed to Gauff for a formal announcement.

“There were only good things to say about Coco and I enjoyed working with her,” Daly said.

Gauff said goodbye to Daly, known as the Grip Specialist, after breaking up with Brad Gilbert last year after a disappointing result at the US Open. Working with her longtime coach, coach Jean Christophe Faurel, Daly spent several weeks with Gouf before the China Open, focusing on turning her grip into service among other technical and tactical details.

Gouf won the China Open and finished the season as WTA Finals champion.

This season, Daly and Faurel are coaches, and Gouf won the title at the French Open and reached the finals at the Madrid Open and the Italian Open. She also won the doubles title at the Canadian Open this month alongside McCartney Kessler.

Gauff has yet to announce any changes to the team, but was seen in court in practice sessions on Wednesday in a practice session with biomechanics experts Faurel and Gavin Macmillan, who previously helped the world’s No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka with her serve. Gauff has struggled with her serve since her victory in Paris and has only won four matches in four events since.

The US Open Main Draw will be held in New York on Sunday. 2023 champion Gouff will be playing for the first time at an exhibition event held at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday night.
