  • Reds working on bringing in slot replacements
  • ‘Genius’ Alonso could be an exciting slot change
        • He’s on par with Jaquet: Liverpool have already signed new Van Dijk

Liverpool are currently working around the clock to appoint a ‘genius’ manager, who has been tipped as the frontrunner to replace Arne Slott.

Reds working on bringing in slot replacements

Although the Reds have won their last two games on a spin, beating Qarabag 6-0 in the Champions League and then beating Newcastle United 4-1 in the Premier League, their overall performance this season remains a cause for concern.

Despite investing heavily in the summer transfer window, the reigning champions have fallen well short of expectations and are currently in sixth place, 14 points behind league leaders Arsenal, with doubts over whether they will qualify for the Champions League.

Jamie Carragher suggested his future could be in jeopardy if Slott fails to lead the team to qualification for Europe’s elite competition, saying: “I think some of the criticism and disdain he received from supporters was too much considering he won the league title last season, but if he doesn’t qualify for the Champions League he won’t have a leg to stand on.”

It remains to be seen whether the Dutchman can turn things around in the final months of the season, but FSG are now starting to consider a replacement.

Liverpool are currently working around the clock to persuade Xabi Alonso to return to Anfield, according to reports from Spain, which could put them in competition with Manchester City, who have identified him as Josep Guardiola’s successor.

Pressure on Slott is said to have reached a “significant level” and his job is on the line, given the big summer investment has not done the Reds any favors on the pitch, with Alonso a top target to replace the 47-year-old.

‘Genius’ Alonso could be an exciting slot change

Slott’s big win against Newcastle may have bought him some time, but if he fails to lead Liverpool to Champions League qualification, the former Bayer Leverkusen manager could be an exciting replacement.

He’s on par with Jaquet: Liverpool have already signed new Van Dijk

The Liverpool star could very well replace Van Dijk when the time is right.

In fact, Sky Sports’ Felix Fischer previously hinted that the Spaniard could be cast in the role, saying: “He is not only a genius tactician but also a gentleman in the way he prepares the team. Everything he does is right.

“I imagine he will be the manager of Liverpool one day.”

The 44-year-old is still in the early stages of his managerial career, but he has already achieved a lot, including winning the Bundesliga title and the DFB Pokal in the 2023-24 season, and has had a very impressive record throughout his spells at Leverkusen and Real Madrid.

Liverpool should not rush to replace Slott, as the former Feyenoord manager won the Premier League title in his first year in charge, but Alonso could be the ideal successor if Slott is sacked.
