Pegra took a 3-0 lead in the opening set, putting Kurehikova in catch-up mode. The former French Open and Wimbledon champions reduced Pegra’s advantages to 4-3, but the Americans pulled away to win the final two games.

In the second set, Krejčíková’s service issues continued, and Pegula was used. Krejčíková’s first one serve win rate was 43% in the match, and she had a 31% win rate for second serve.

“I think I’ve played really good tennis, I’m just playing very solid,” Pegra said after the game. “I’ve got off to a very good start, so I really wanted to do that today, especially with someone like her who’s so dangerous.”
