Manchester City reportedly signed England centre back Mark Gehi, who is now captain of Crystal Palace, creating a fresh competition with Liverpool.

Although the former bids and specific offers have yet to emerge, the city is reportedly preparing to rival Liverpool to secure Guéhi’s signature in 2026.

Guéhi has almost joined Liverpool in a recently closed transfer window. The transaction went into the medical stage and fees were agreed. However, Crystal Palace was supported for failing to find a suitable alternative.

According to Football Insider, City views Gahee as the best target and is one of the clear candidates for his service. They may pursue a move when Guéhi becomes available for free next summer, or they may try to attack bargain deals before.

Gehi, who had been in the palace since 2021, became the focus of their defense and became captain. His performance won him regular calls to England.

If the city succeeds in signing Gehi, it could significantly strengthen their defense. They had enough defensive talent, but stability at centre-back means their team still needs it despite the likes of the John Stones and Reuben Diaz.

Also, competing with Liverpool for players signals about ambition, and timing and negotiation are important in the fight for the addition of elite defense.

What’s next for Marc Guehi?

It all depends on when both the city and Liverpool make their moves. Ideally, both agree to a deal with the defender in January and wait for free signing until the summer transfer period.

However, if one of them acts cleverly in the winter transfer window, they can steal players ahead of their Premier League rivals.

Guéhi is one of the most consistent performers, not just for the Premier League in his position, but also for the England national team whenever he is given the opportunity.
