  • James Trafford joins Man City from Burnley in the summer
  • The city is expected to make a decision soon.

TEAMtalk reports that Manchester City are taking a cautious approach when deciding on the long-term future of young goalkeeper James Trafford.

The 23-year-old shot-stopper arrived at the Etihad Stadium as a high-profile arrival in the summer transfer window, but has found his first-team opportunities limited after signing Gianluigi Donnarumma in the summer.

As a result, Trafford’s place within Josep Guardiola’s squad is unclear, with talks over his next steps yet to officially begin.

However, the situation is likely to evolve in the coming months, and we expect discussions to intensify from December onwards.

James Trafford joins Man City from Burnley in the summer

Trafford joined Manchester City with high expectations. Regarded as one of the most promising young goalkeepers in English football, his move to City was aimed at strengthening the club’s depth in key positions and potentially becoming Ederson’s long-term successor.

However, things changed dramatically when Donnarumma arrived from Paris Saint-Germain in August.

The Italian international quickly became Guardiola’s first choice, relegating Trafford to a reserve role.

Trafford is yet to feature in a Premier League game for City since Donnarumma’s arrival. His game time has been limited to cup matches and training sessions, a situation that inevitably raises questions about his development and future at the club.

Despite this, City are in no hurry to make any decisions. Club leaders believe Trafford still has huge potential and could play a key role in the future, either as a reliable replacement for Donnarumma or as a starting goalkeeper on loan.

The next few months will be important. City will begin discussions about Trafford’s long-term role in December, considering options including a loan move, permanent transfer or continued integration into the first-team set-up.

A lot depends on the player’s ambition, his performance in training and the club’s strategy.
Trafford himself is thought to be open to exploring opportunities to secure regular playing time, whether at the Etihad or elsewhere.

Competition for the number one spot has been fierce since Donnarumma’s arrival, and Trafford’s lack of action in the Premier League reflects their challenge to break into one of Europe’s strongest teams.

However, with negotiations expected to intensify later this year, both player and club will need to decide on the best path forward in the near future.
