Newcastle decide to sign in January amid injury problems

Newcastle have not had a great start to the season and injuries have had a big part to play in this. They are currently without their starting full-back pair Tino Livramento and Yoan Wissa, who was signed for £55m in the summer.

Wissa went on strike at Brentford over the summer to force a move to Newcastle, and was embroiled in his own Alexander Isaac-style saga. His wish came true, but he has yet to feature for his new club due to a knee injury sustained during the international break in September.

Wissa is expected to return in the coming weeks, but there are already concerns about him. So while there was talk of Newcastle signing another striker to compete with him and Nick Waltemade, this seems far from reality.

According to Football Insider, manager Pete O’Rourke has revealed that Newcastle have no plans to sign a new striker when the transfer window reopens.

“I would be surprised if they brought in a new striker. I think obviously Woltemade is hitting the ground running. Unfortunately due to injury, we haven’t seen Yoan Wissa yet. I don’t think Newcastle are rushing to make plans to add a striker just yet. They will be hoping that Wissa can come in fit and prove his worth to the team as soon as possible.”

“So, as things stand, I think it is unlikely that Newcastle will look to sign a new striker. I am sure their focus will be on getting Wissa fit as quickly as possible so that he can be used in Eddie Howe’s team.”

Despite this, Newcastle may look to address other positions in January as they look to improve in the first two months of the season.
