  • Manchester United prioritize signing midfield players
  • Red Devils have multiple names on shortlist

Manchester United have stepped up their pursuit of Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomez, with reports claiming the Brazilian is keen on a move to Old Trafford.

According to TEAMtalk, the 24-year-old has been troubled by increased interest from United, but Wolves are adamant they have no intention of parting with one of their most valuable assets midway through the season.

Since joining Wolves from Flamengo, Gomez has developed into a key cog in the heart of Wolves’ midfield.

His relentless work rate, ball-winning ability and tactical maturity have attracted the attention of some of England’s biggest clubs, with Man United showing the strongest interest in the Brazilian midfielder.

Manchester United prioritize signing midfield players

The Wolves midfielder has always been linked with a move to United, with Casemiro facing an uncertain future at Old Trafford and Ruben Amorim looking for an energetic, athletic presence in midfield.

His performances have attracted attention and United see him as the ideal long-term solution to strengthen their midfield.

However, it is not easy to conclude a contract. Wolves have made it clear they do not want to lose Gomez in January, especially as the club fights to avoid relegation.

The Midlands side reportedly value him at around £50m, a figure United will need to meet if they are to force a deal.

Amorim has made signing a midfielder one of his top priorities for 2026 as United continue to evolve their squad after a poor start to the season.

In addition to Gomez, United are monitoring several other midfield options, including Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, Brentford’s Yehor Yarmoliyuk and Brighton’s Carlos Baleva.

Despite this shortlist, sources close to the club claim that Amorim sees Gomez as a priority target. The manager is reportedly attracted to Gomez’s versatility in the middle of the park.

Wolves’ star players can develop both defensively and in transition periods of play, something United have lacked since Casemiro’s decline.
