Penguins’ sidelined goalie joins full-speed forward drills in comeback effort

The Pittsburgh Penguins are getting closer to seeing two key players back on the ice. Goaltender Tristan Jarry, sidelined since November 4 due to a lower-body injury, fully engaged in Monday’s practice alongside 22-year-old forward Ville Koivunen, who also participated completely. Jarry practiced with the main team alongside fellow goalie Arturs Silovs, while Koivunen worked with the defense group.

Rookie goalie Sergei Murashov, who holds a 1-1 record with a .913 save percentage and a 1.90 goals-against average, took part in practice but served as the third goalie.

Jarry, 30, had a promising start this season, boasting five wins, two shutouts, and a .911 save percentage before his injury. He has been determined to recover after a challenging 2024-25 season, which included being placed on waivers, time in the AHL, and a .893 save rate. Koivunen’s production dipped this season, leading to a brief stint in the AHL, but before his injury, he had four goals and 11 points in six AHL games and was gaining momentum with the Penguins, having scored two points in 11 NHL games.

The Penguins have struggled with injuries, reflected in their 2-4-3 record in November, making the return of these players a critical boost. Forwards Justin Brazeau, Rickard Rakell, Noel Acciari, along with defensemen Jack St. Ivany and rookie Harrison Brunicke, are also working towards recovery; the latter two have been sent to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for conditioning.

An interesting moment after practice came when Penguins forward prospect Tristan Broz, newly recalled from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, attracted media attention.
