On Wednesday, David Luiz, 38, netted his first Champions League goal in over eight years.

The Brazilian defender, currently with Paphos and known for his signature curly hair, leaped in the air to deliver a powerful header into the top corner of AS Monaco’s net, leveling the score at 1-1 in the 18th minute.

At 38 years and 218 days, he becomes the second-oldest player to score in Champions League history, following Portuguese defender Pepe, who was 40 years and 290 days when he scored in December 2023 while playing for FC Porto against Shakhtar Donetsk.

After Luiz’s goal, Monaco regained the lead through American striker Folarin Balogun. Nevertheless, Paphos managed to secure a crucial draw with an own goal from Mohamed Salisu in the 88th minute.

Luiz last found the net in this prestigious tournament back in October 2017, during his second season with Chelsea, in a thrilling 3-3 match against Roma at Stamford Bridge.

He played a pivotal role in Chelsea’s Champions League triumph in 2012 and later joined Paris Saint-Germain. His Champions League journey began in 2007 with Benfica.

Having returned to Europe in August after four seasons in Brazil, Luiz is making his major tournament debut with the Cypriot champions, Paphos.

Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

Fan Take: David Luiz’s remarkable goal underscores the enduring talent of seasoned players in a youth-dominated sport, reminding fans that experience is invaluable on the field. This moment not only revives memories of his illustrious career but also highlights the competitive spirit of clubs like Paphos, potentially shaking up the dynamics in European football.
