Miretown Hunts Maiden Major Victory Under Russell and Scudamore’s Leadership

Michael Scudamore is set to officially solidify his training partnership with Grand National-winning trainer Lucinda Russell this Saturday as Miretown heads to Newbury leading the Coral Gold Cup. Scudamore, who is the son of Russell’s partner and assistant Peter Scudamore, formally took on Kinross Shipyards’ license in August after previously training independently.

The duo hopes Miretown will demonstrate ongoing progress as he competes at the Berkshire track for the first time since his Cheltenham Festival victory in March. Scudamore expressed excitement about participating in such a prestigious race, noting that Miretown’s impressive Cheltenham performance came despite carrying a very light weight and a rating that didn’t quite match such a competitive event. He believes the horse, still young with limited racing experience, has the potential to improve further.

Miretown’s training has been strong, including a recent break to ensure peak condition for Newbury, with Scudamore hopeful he can continue to develop. Meanwhile, at the Ultima, Joe Tizzard’s The Changing Man, coming off a second-place finish at Ascot, is in excellent shape and ready to make a big impact, with the team hopeful that a cheekpiece might further enhance performance.

Olly Murphy and Sean Bowen remain a formidable team early in the season, with Resplendent Gray showing versatility and stamina, having won the bet365 Gold Cup last season and a recent intermediate chase. Despite a challenging weekend recently, Murphy is optimistic about the horse’s form and prospects going forward.

Sam Thomas, known for winning this race on Denman as a jockey, is now training Katedri who is in good health and preparing for a hurdles race at Aintree. Thomas acknowledges Katedri’s competitive weight but is uncertain about further improvement potential. Meanwhile, Nicky Henderson’s Hyland, having finished second to Katedri in a major Kempton handicap, remains a strong contender with hopes for continued progress.
