Inside the Jake Paul vs. Gervonta Davis Fight: Unpacking the Weight Limit and Special Glove Rules

A highly anticipated boxing match between Jake Paul and Gervonta Davis is beginning to take form. Nakisa Bidalian, co-founder of Most Valuable Promotions (MVP), revealed details about this trade fight featuring cruiserweight Jake Paul versus lightweight champion Gervonta Davis. MVP held a press event in New York City leading up to the November 14 bout. The fight will consist of 10 exhibition rounds, each three minutes long. Although it won’t be recorded on either fighter’s professional record, a ringside judge will declare a winner. Fighters are limited to a maximum weight of 195 pounds and will wear 12-ounce gloves. Typically, Paul fights with 10-ounce gloves (except for a recent exhibition with Mike Tyson where he used 14-ounce gloves), while Davis normally wears 8-ounce gloves, standard for welterweight and below.

Originally planned for Atlanta’s State Farm Arena, the match has been relocated to Miami’s Caseya Center after the Georgia State Athletic Commission rejected it. A major concern is the significant weight disparity, as Paul usually competes at 200 pounds—about 65 pounds heavier than Davis, the reigning WBA lightweight champion who usually fights at 135 pounds. Davis, holding a 30-0-1 record with 28 knockouts, has notable wins over Ryan Garcia, Rolando Romero, Isaac Cruz, and Mario Barrios, though he recently had a disputed majority draw against Lamont Roach Jr. Despite his extensive experience, Davis will be conceding a considerable weight advantage in this match. On the other hand, Paul holds a 12-1 record with 7 knockouts and has high-profile victories over former UFC champs Anderson Silva, Nate Diaz, and Tyron Woodley twice, recently beating Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. by unanimous decision.

Fan Take: This fight showcases an unusual matchup that challenges traditional boxing weight classes, offering a spectacle that could shake up how exhibition bouts are viewed. For fighting fans, it brings excitement and intrigue, potentially opening doors for more crossover events that blend entertainment with competition in new ways.
