Mohamed Salah was benched during Liverpool’s match against West Ham on Sunday, a first under manager Arne Slott in the Premier League.

The decision came as both the player and the team struggled, with Liverpool suffering six losses in their last seven league matches, and Salah only scoring four goals this season.

Florian Wirtz made his return to the squad after a two-game absence due to injury, prompting Slott to adjust his lineup in hopes of pushing the reigning champions back into the top half of the standings.

“We have many players available aside from Mo, and I understand your curiosity,” Slott stated prior to the match. “We’re facing four games in ten days, and with many strong players, this lineup was our choice today. Sometimes [Alexander] Isak is on the bench, other times it’s Wirtz. I get why the bench players are significant, but the starters carry their weight too.”

“It wasn’t a straightforward choice given the talent on the field. This isn’t the first time I’ve opted not to start Mo, similar to my decisions with Isak, Wirtz, and (Hugo) Etikite.”

Fan Take: This news is significant for soccer enthusiasts as it highlights the challenges faced by top players and teams in maintaining peak performance. Salah’s benching could signal a turning point for Liverpool’s strategy and direction, possibly shaping the course of the season and influencing how teams manage star talent in high-pressure situations.
