Newcastle United are now joining several top clubs in their bid to sign a teenage star with the same “talent level” as Erling Haaland, according to reports.

Alan Shearer praises ‘fantastic’ Guimarães despite Tottenham draw

Newcastle have a chance to redeem themselves against Burnley this weekend, but will look back on their 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur as a wasted opportunity. The Magpies were almost in the ascendancy until a shocking Cristian Romero brace, including an overhead kick in the second half, gave way.

However, Eddie Howe still has plenty of reasons to be optimistic, and one of those reasons is Bruno Guimarães’ performance. The Brazilian came off the bench to find the back of the net and was praised by Tyneside legend Alan Shearer.

“I thought Newcastle played really well, there was an intensity to their game.

“I also thought the two full-backs played really well. They kept Tottenham from scoring just a little bit in the first half, but they didn’t score. Lewis Miley had a good chance. Joelinton hit the post and hit one or two more.”

“And you always worry when you’re so dominant in the first half and you don’t score. So I think we’ll be fine. Then he changed and put Tonali down. I don’t know if he was injured at half-time, but he put Tonali down and brought on Bruno Guimarães. And his performance in the second half was great.”

It was an outstanding performance by Newcastle’s fan favorites, but that may not stop the Magpies from welcoming new midfield reinforcements in the January transfer window.

Two Newcastle players in particular won’t be too happy at the moment.

The St James Park side have already been linked with the likes of Scott McTominay on that front and could welcome the Scotland international before turning their attention to high-profile Yann Diomand.

Newcastle joins Yan Diomande race

According to Team Talk, Newcastle have joined the race to sign Diomande, with the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Liverpool vying for the winger.

One RB Leipzig source told Teamtalk that the winger is on the same “level of talent” as Manchester City star Haaland, who also starred for Red Bull at Salzburg a few years ago.

“In terms of the level of talent, Red Bull haven’t experienced this kind of interest since Erling Haaland. The ceiling for this kid is so high. But it must be pointed out that there are no signs for sale for him. Leipzig don’t want him to leave.”

Newcastle have reportedly sent scouts to keep an eye on the 19-year-old, but it remains to be seen whether they will be in a position to secure his arrival.

What’s more, Leipzig themselves have no intention of letting their young star leave, and a reported €100m (approximately 8.7 billion yen) release fee could help fend off at least some interest.

Given Anthony Elanga’s struggles this season, Diomande is someone the Magpies should be fully committed to if they want to complete their front line alongside record holder Nick Woltemade.
