Ex-Oilers Forward Calls Time on Career, Signs New Deal Abroad

Derick Brassard, a former forward for the Edmonton Oilers, has officially retired from professional hockey. Despite this, Swiss National League team Genève-Servette has signed him for the remainder of the 2025-26 season, as reported by Nicolas St-Pierre. This move is unexpected since Brassard, now 38, last played professionally in the 2022-23 season with the Ottawa Senators. His decision to resume his career abroad is an interesting development.

Brassard brings a wealth of NHL experience to Genève-Servette. Drafted 6th overall in 2006, he enjoyed a 16-season NHL career, accumulating 215 goals, 330 assists, and 545 points over 1,013 games. His time with the Oilers was brief; during the 2021-22 season, he appeared in 15 games, recording two goals, one assist, 21 hits, and a minus-2 rating.

Fan Take: Brassard’s return to professional hockey overseas highlights how veteran players can extend their careers and contribute valuable experience to international leagues. For hockey fans, it’s exciting to see seasoned NHL talents like Brassard continuing to influence the game globally, which helps grow the sport beyond North America.
