Tottenham managed to keep Cristian Romero in the summer, but he could still leave in 2026. The defender has attracted significant interest from Atletico Madrid, who, along with a number of his Argentine team-mates, remain hopeful of bringing him to the Spanish capital.

Romero committed his future to Tottenham by signing a new contract despite Atleti’s interest, but while that was enough to prevent a deal from happening in the summer, the same cannot be done in the 2026 transfer window.

According to Tottenham News, former club scout Brian King has revealed that Tottenham could be open to a bid of around £60m for Romero, although there is no indication that Romero actually wants to leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“Romero, he has just signed a new contract. He signed an improved contract in the summer, which has made a big difference to his salary packet. He is one of Tottenham’s highest paid players, so it will not be cheap to let him go. If Atletico are going to let him go, they will have to think again. He has just signed a new contract.”

“He’s going to cost between £60m and £70m. The fact that he’s Argentinian, the fact that Diego Simeone is Argentinian, has nothing to do with that. If Spurs don’t want to sell, he won’t move unless a crazy offer comes in. That’s what they need to do.”

How important is Cristian Romero to Tottenham?

Micky van de Ven has received a lot of praise for his leadership since joining Tottenham, but there is also a persistent view that Romero is more important to the club. He has been a top performer for many seasons, so it would be a huge blow if he were to leave.
