Liverpool have rekindled their links with the academy in recent years. I would like to thank manager Jurgen Klopp for that. The German manager’s illustrious tenure oversaw the rise of Trent Alexander-Arnold and also saw the emergence of a number of promising prospects.

Towards the end of his journey, ‘Klopp’s kids’ played a key role in steadying the ship for the 2023/24 season, playing against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup, where the injury-hit Reds stood no chance, but as pundit Gary Neville infamously claimed, the Reds won as well against a ‘billion-pound job in a bottle’.

Arne Slott has parted ways with a number of Liverpool prospects to replace Klopp in 2024. FSG are rethinking Liverpool’s strategy and such young players will likely only be given more than a bit part role.

But the Anfield side are experiencing a new wave. Although he may not be getting a lot of attention right now, this team is full of young talent, and Rio Ngmoha is one of their best.

Rio Ngmoja’s future at Liverpool

Liverpool sold Luis Diaz to Bayern Munich in August for around £65.5 million, but Bayern Munich did not directly sign his replacement. This was because sporting director Richard Hughes had already added a lot of attacking talent to the squad, with Alexander Isak still to come, but the rise of left-winger Ngmoha was also a key factor.

The Reds have now set their sights on Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, who has a £65m release clause in his contract and has all the Premier League heavyweights named.

Ngmoha has such talent and potential that he has been a part of Liverpool’s first team throughout the season. Despite this, his appearances in matches were limited, appearing only eight times. Additionally, he has recently featured for Rob Page’s Under-21 side, ostensibly to improve his match fitness.

After scoring the dramatic winner at St James’s Park in August, 17-year-old Gumoha declared himself the Merseysiders’ much-needed new star.

He is Liverpool’s most exciting young player, but that doesn’t mean players further down the pecking order don’t have the qualities needed to leapfrog the former Chelsea prospect, and this one in particular stands out.

Liverpool’s young players who could rival Ngumoha

The path from Liverpool’s first-team youth to superstardom is a less traveled one, but Joshua Abe has the qualities to make the leap in the mold of Ngmoha and the players who came before him.

Abe, 15, punches well above his weight and has established himself in the U18 team, with The Secret Scout calling him “the best winger in the country” in his age group. That’s really high praise.

In the U18 Premier League, Abe has already scored two goals and provided two assists in five games. He has scored three goals in five caps for England Under-16s.

With a natural scoring instinct and a desire to cut in from the right and arc towards the center, Abe has the directness and explosiveness to become Liverpool’s version of Semenyo in the future, with one scout suggesting he has the potential and natural physicality to emulate the style of play of players like Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka.

Perhaps that’s why the Gunners are reportedly interested in the wide forward, with Gunners scouts keeping an eye on him this season ahead of a 2026 swoop. Even if Liverpool have plans to sign a player like Semenyo, they cannot afford to allow him to join their rivals.

If Abe can take over the baton from the legendary Mohamed Salah and fulfill his potential in the majors, he could be a more exciting addition to the Reds than Ngmoha.

Liverpool’s interest in Semenyo is genuine, but if Salah leaves in January, as is perhaps feared, they will only go ahead with plans to sign a winger.

However, given that up-and-comers like Mr. Gumoha and Mr. Abe are at the forefront, the hesitation is understandable.
