Thomas Eyes Second Wales Title with Determined Grip on Victory

Sam Thomas is targeting two major contenders, Jubilee Express and Showmen Uchi, at the Coral Welsh Grand National as he aims to clinch his second victory in the event following his success with Iwyldoit. Iwyldoit showed strong determination to perform well in 2021, and Jubilee Express is now looking to build on last year’s runner-up finish.

Jubilee Express has returned to Chepstow after winning a trial race on the same track while carrying a lighter weight. Thomas describes him as a powerful horse who requires a lot of effort but believes there’s more to come as the horse has adapted better to competitive races and understands what to expect in big events. Thomas emphasizes the importance of proper preparation for these significant races.

Showmen Uchi, Thomas’s stablemate, has had a lighter racing career with only seven races and just two over fences, making him comparatively inexperienced for an eight-year-old. However, he made a strong season comeback by finishing fourth behind Top of the Bill at Haydock. Thomas notes that Showmen Uchi is a more refined horse compared to Jubilee Express and has been highly regarded by the team despite his limited racing due to past vulnerabilities. He approaches the upcoming race with a different strategy for Showmen Uchi compared to Jubilee Express.

Thomas, based about 30 miles from Chepstow, shared the personal significance of winning the race for him and owner Dai Walters, highlighting their pride in being Welsh and their fondness for competing at Chepstow. Reflecting on Iwyldoit’s win, Thomas spoke about the emotional connection, especially since owner and breeder Stan Brown gave him his first victory as a jockey. The horse was leased to Diamond Racing, allowing them to experience the thrill of a major race win firsthand.

Stable jockey Dylan Johnston has yet to decide which horse he will ride, admitting the challenge in making the choice and relying on his instincts as well as input from Sam and his agent. Johnston acknowledged the pressure of making the right decision, noting that even top competitors rarely make mistakes, and he wants to maintain his standing without errors.

Fan Take: This update is thrilling for horse racing enthusiasts as it highlights the strategic preparations and hopeful prospects of two promising horses in a prestigious race. A strong showing by Thomas’s contenders could shake up the status quo and energize the sport with fresh talent and regional pride at Chepstow.
