Ex-Blackhawks’ Top Drafted Pitcher Makes Move to Canadian Team

Former Chicago Blackhawks forward Phillip Danault is making a move. The Montreal Canadiens have announced they acquired Danault from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for a 2026 second-round draft pick.

Danault, known as one of the key trade targets in the NHL, had been linked to the Canadiens, marking the start of his second tenure with the team. After a challenging start to the 2025-26 season, where he has yet to score a goal in 30 games but has provided 5 assists, Danault aims to revive his form. Last season, he posted solid numbers with the Kings, scoring eight goals and tallying 43 points across 80 games.

Danault’s NHL journey began with the Blackhawks, who selected him 26th overall in the first round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft. He spent two seasons with Chicago from 2014-15 to 2015-16, recording one goal and five points in 32 games. His time with the Blackhawks ended during the 2015-16 season when he was traded to the Canadiens in exchange for Dale Weise, Thomas Fleischmann, and a 2018 second-round pick. Since joining Montreal, Danault evolved into a reliable two-way center, playing a key role in the top six forward group.

Fan Take: This trade is a significant moment for Canadiens fans eager to see Danault regain his impact on the ice. His return could bolster Montreal’s depth and competitiveness, highlighting how strategic moves can shape a team’s future in the highly dynamic NHL landscape.
