Tommy Joe, a homebred horse from Spendthrift Farm, will not participate in the Grade 3 Forward Gal at Gulfstream Park on January 31st, according to Thoroughbred Daily News. Ned Toffey, Spendthrift Farm’s general manager, shared that although they had planned to enter her in the race, Tommy Joe encountered some problems and will now take a break, with hopes of returning later in the year.

Tommy Joe, the daughter of top sire Into Mischief, had an impressive record as a filly, winning three of her four races. Her notable achievements include victories in the Grade 1 Spinaway at Saratoga and the Grade 1 Alcibiades at Keeneland, although she was disqualified in the latter. She placed fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies despite being the second betting choice. Since then, she has trained twice under Todd Pletcher at Palm Beach Downs, most recently clocking 4 furlongs in 49.36 seconds on December 27. John Velasquez has been the jockey for all her races.

Additionally, Tommy Joe is out of Mother Mother, a multiple Grade 1 winner trained by Bob Baffert and sired by Pioneer of the Nile. For further details, visit thoroughbreddailynews.com.

Fan Take: Tommy Joe’s absence from the Forward Gal is a significant update for racing enthusiasts, as she is a promising young filly with strong lineage and impressive performances. Her planned return later this year holds potential to impact the field in upcoming top-tier races, keeping fans eager for fresh competition and emerging talent in the sport.
