What led to Lewis Hamilton’s unexpected track stoppage during the Ferrari SF-26 shakedown?

Ferrari revealed its 2026 Formula 1 contender today during a shakedown session in Italy, though concerns arose after the car unexpectedly came to a halt on the track. The SF-26 made its first appearance at Fiorano with Lewis Hamilton behind the wheel for the very first time.

Following a disappointing 2025 season with no victories, Ferrari is determined to return to the front of the grid in the upcoming year. Hamilton, who faced significant difficulties during his first year with the Scuderia and failed to reach the podium in any of the 24 races last season, is also aiming for a strong improvement.

Hamilton took the SF-26 out for a wet run at Fiorano, but fans were puzzled when footage surfaced showing him abruptly stopping on the circuit during the demonstration. Videos later emerged on social media showing a mechanic driving out to retrieve the car and bring it back to the garage, prompting speculation that the car might have experienced technical issues.

Ferrari swiftly dismissed these rumors, clarifying that the stop was not due to a mechanical failure. Instead, Hamilton was instructed to halt intentionally because the team’s allowed running distance was capped for this demo event. The limit was set at 15 kilometers, with Hamilton completing two and a half laps before stopping to let teammate Charles Leclerc complete an equal distance, adhering to the restrictions.

Fan Take:
This glimpse of Ferrari’s 2026 car is crucial for racing enthusiasts eager to see if the iconic team can reclaim its former glory. While the early halt sparked concerns, the controlled nature of the demo run reflects careful preparation that could signify a strategic and competitive season ahead for Formula 1.
