Justin Gaethje vs. Dustin Poirier: Former Two-Time UFC Champion Declares ‘100%’ Who Builds the Stronger Legacy

One of the most thrilling fighters in UFC history, Justin Gaethje, added a new chapter to his impressive career this past Saturday. His win over Paddy Pimblett, while drawing some criticism due to the fight’s chaotic brawls, demonstrated that “The Highlight” still possesses the energy and fighting spirit for another potentially iconic performance.

Dustin Poirier commended Gaethje for snapping Pimblett’s undefeated streak and securing a historic victory inside the Octagon. In the wake of UFC 324, discussions emerged about the legacies of these two former rivals.

Henry Cejudo weighed in, asserting that Gaethje holds a superior legacy compared to Poirier. This came amid Gaethje’s sharp rebuttal to Pimblett’s earlier critiques of Poirier during the UFC 324 press conference. Despite Poirier’s recent retirement after just two matches since stepping away, he has confirmed plans to face Gaethje for a third time.

On the popular “Pound 4 Pound” podcast, Cejudo confidently stated, “It’s Justin. What he’s been able to give fans so far… Poirier has lost to some surprising opponents, but Justin’s career deserves Hall of Fame recognition.” He added, “When it comes to a legendary career in the UFC, that’s 100% Justin Gaethje.”

Meanwhile, fans continue to debate whether a third fight between Poirier and Gaethje is a must-see event. Both lightweight legends have a passionate following, and many are eager to witness the trilogy unfold.

Looking at their careers, Poirier, though currently retired, has enjoyed a lengthy tenure in the UFC and once held the interim lightweight title. Gaethje, who also claimed interim gold, stands on the brink of an even greater accomplishment: capturing the undisputed lightweight championship by defeating top contender Ilya Topuria. Notably, Gaethje has matched Poirier’s record for Fight of the Night bonuses despite having fought 17 fewer UFC bouts—underscoring his intense, unforgettable style.

Fan Take: This ongoing rivalry between Gaethje and Poirier is a defining storyline for lightweight MMA fans, highlighting two warriors pushing the limits of the sport. How their legacies evolve—especially if they meet again—will shape the future narrative of UFC’s lightweight division and inspire the next generation of fighters.
