Turfway Park in Florence, Kentucky, and Charles Town in West Virginia have both canceled their scheduled racing events for Wednesday, January 28, due to dangerously cold temperatures. Turfway Park has also called off its Thursday, January 29 card.

According to a Turfway Park press release, the National Weather Service predicts wind chill values to stay above single digits for the next 48 hours but drop to -11 degrees by Wednesday. Track officials will keep monitoring the weather and plan to decide on the status of the Friday, January 30, and Saturday, January 31 events on Wednesday. Similarly, Charles Town officials intend to determine the fate of Thursday’s card on Wednesday as well.

The New York Racing Association (NYRA) announced on Monday that races scheduled at Suidobashi for Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will be canceled due to the cold conditions, with a rescheduled card set to be released on February 4. Notably, Suidobashi is set to hold the Wizards Stakes this Saturday, a key points race for the Kentucky Derby.

In addition, Parks Racing in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, canceled races earlier this week on Monday and Tuesday because of weather concerns. Other tracks affected by the weather on January 27 include Mahoning Valley Race Course in Ohio, Louisiana Downs, and Will Rogers in Oklahoma.

Fan Take:
This widespread disruption highlights how extreme weather can significantly impact the racing calendar, forcing tracks to adapt quickly. For horse racing fans and participants, it underscores the importance of flexibility and contingency planning as the sport navigates the challenges posed by increasingly unpredictable conditions.
