Manchester United have suffered a major setback as Patrick Dorg is out for up to 10 weeks with a hamstring injury, according to The Athletic.

It was initially hoped that the problem was just a spasm, but further assessment revealed a much more serious problem, leaving interim manager Michael Carrick facing a major selection dilemma at a crucial time in the season.

The 21-year-old has been in impressive form and has become one of United’s most exciting players under Carrick.

Dorg’s performances in recent weeks have been nothing short of exceptional, highlighted by his crucial contributions in United’s victories over Manchester City and Arsenal.

His goal against Arsenal, a stunning shot into the top corner, has already been hailed as one of the best goals of his young career and a potential Goal of the Season candidate.

But his impressive progress has now been interrupted by an injury sustained during United’s dramatic 3-2 win over Arsenal at Old Trafford.

The game was a huge boost for Carrick’s rejuvenated team, but it came at a heavy price.

Dolgu showed signs of not feeling well towards the end of the game, and although there was initial optimism, tests revealed a more serious hamstring tear and he would be sidelined for about two and a half months.

The timing couldn’t have been worse for United. Dorg’s versatility, able to play as a full-back, wing-back or wide midfielder, made him invaluable during a period of injury and tactical restructuring.

Now Carrick needs to rethink his team’s plans. There is deep dissatisfaction within the club over Dorg’s departure just when he was in top form.

But for now, Man United will have to survive a crucial period of the season without their most exciting and in-form player.

His absence was a huge blow, not only because of what he brings to the pitch, but also because he was rapidly developing into a central figure under Carrick.
