Tottenham are considering a £20m move for Wolves left-back Hugo Bueno after their attempt to bring Andy Robertson to north London from Liverpool failed, according to TEAMtalk.
Spurs were keen to sign the Scotland international, believing his experience and leadership would immediately elevate them through the team’s defensive ranks.
However, Liverpool firmly rejected their advances, leaving Tottenham to quickly pivot to alternative options before the end of the season in January.
Their attention has now shifted to Bueno, one of the few bright spots in a struggling Wolves team currently at the bottom of the Premier League.
Hugo Bueno has impressed for Tottenham this season
Despite the club’s precarious position in the league, Bueno has been a consistent performer, showing pace, defensive awareness and a desire to advance into attacking areas.
Spurs’ search for a new left-back has become even more urgent due to injuries and a lack of depth in the position.
Destiny Oudogie remains a key part of the club’s long-term plans, but repeated fitness issues and the need for rotational support have forced Tottenham into the market.
The recent injury sustained by Ben Davies has made things even worse for Thomas Frank and his team.
Robertson was thought to be the ideal short-term solution, an elite defender with a proven track record in the Premier League who could mentor young players, but his rejection by Liverpool meant Spurs had to pursue a replacement with much longer-term potential.
Thomas Frank eyeing new left-back signing
Despite Wolves’ struggles, Bueno’s performances this season have been strong enough to attract interest not only from Tottenham but also from other top teams in the early stages of the season.
However, Wolves are expected to bite unless an offer arrives that significantly strengthens their hand, especially if they are to avoid relegation.
Tottenham’s decision now rests on whether they believe their £20m investment in Bueno will address both their immediate and future needs at left-back.
With Frank pushing for reinforcements to fit into his high-tempo front-foot system, Spurs see Bueno as a player who can adapt quickly, provide depth and potentially challenge for a starting role in the long term.
