Dane St. Clair was awarded the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year title after an outstanding season with Minnesota United. However, he caught many off guard by leaving the team that selected him and signing with Inter Miami, a decision he stands by without regret.

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — Dane St. Clair is ready for a new chapter. Minnesota was pivotal in his growth as a goalkeeper, and he spent three complete seasons there, earning considerable praise and culminating in his award for the 2025 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. Yet, the opportunity presented by free agency was too enticing to ignore, prompting him to explore his options.

“I got to consider everyone’s opinions during this process. Entering free agency was my first chance to influence my next move, so I was all ears,” he shares with Goal.

All options were on the table, including the possibility of re-signing with Minnesota, but then Miami reached out to him.

“When Miami approached me and outlined their vision and how they viewed my role, I knew it was the right fit for me,” he explains.

St. Clair is also playing a significant part in Miami’s comprehensive recruitment strategy. This offseason, the reigning MLS champions are fortifying their roster by signing elite talent, with St. Clair becoming a vital addition. This move is particularly strategic for him as he prepares to compete in various tournaments leading up to the World Cup.

“Joining a team that participates in high-profile matches like the CONCACAF Champions Cup, with a brand new stadium and surrounded by world-class players is exactly what I was looking for,” he adds.

The Canadian goalkeeper discussed his transition to Inter Miami, the reasons behind his departure from Minnesota, and the influence of Canadian coach Jesse Marsh on his decision.

About Moving to Miami

Goal: Let’s start with your significant move. Why Miami, and why now?
ST. CLAIR: As a free agent, I had the opportunity to listen to various perspectives. When Miami came forward and shared their plans and how I fit into it, I realized that it was truly the best choice for me. With the World Cup on the horizon, it was essential for me to be in a situation that would set me up for success. Additionally, competing in higher-profile games while being surrounded by top players made it a perfect challenge.

On Leaving Minnesota

Goal: Was it hard to leave Minnesota?
ST. CLAIR: Absolutely. I cherished my time there and had many memorable experiences. However, when the chance to join Miami arose, I carefully considered it and felt that pursuing something new was the right decision at this stage of my career.

Inter Miami’s Expectations for MLS Cup

Goal: Now that you’re the defending champions, what does that mean for you? Is there pressure, or is it excitement?
ST. CLAIR: It’s monumental, as it’s been a while since this team has maintained such accomplishments. We are expected to win every competition we’re involved with, and given the talent being assembled, our goal is to claim trophies.

About the Canadian National Team

Goal: With this move, you’ve entered the path to high-profile games. How does this impact your national team ambitions?
ST. CLAIR: Absolutely, positioning myself for the World Cup was a top priority. By being in a competitive environment, especially with the CONCACAF Champions Cup, I can face high-pressure situations that mimic what I’ll encounter on the international stage. This decision not only aids my club career but also my contributions to the national team.

Goal: Did you consult Jesse Marsh about your choices?
ST. CLAIR: Yes, Jesse is very supportive and focused on what’s best for players. He encouraged me to pursue what felt right, affirming that his role was to support my decision regardless of path.

Fan Take: Dane St. Clair’s move to Inter Miami signifies a shift in MLS dynamics, reflecting the growing competitiveness of the league and elevating the attention it garners. For soccer fans, this transition not only enhances Miami’s roster but also sets the stage for thrilling matchups and emerging talent leading into the World Cup.
