Liverpool are reportedly one step closer to signing Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, who has completed a medical with the Reds.

The talented 20-year-old has attracted a lot of attention this winter, with The Athletic set to report on his medical at Liverpool.

And now the Telegraph’s Mike McGrath has posted in X that the medical has been completed and Jaquet is set to join Liverpool in the summer in a £60m package.

The deal between Jaquet and Liverpool appears to be almost complete, so read below for more details…

McGrath posted: “Jeremy Jaquet has completed his medical at Liverpool. The 20-year-old centre-back will be joining us.” #LFC It is a £60m deal, with an upfront payment of £55m, and he will join in the summer after finishing the season at Rennes. ”

Chelsea were also linked with a move to sign Jaquet early in this transfer window, but it appears that no deal was reached.

Sky Sports’ Kavet Solhekor posted that the Blues are chasing the young defender and Rennes have always wanted to keep him until the summer.

This was perhaps the key detail as LFC have apparently allowed Jaquet to remain at the Ligue 1 club for a few more months.

In contrast, Chelsea now appear to really need a new defender and this led to the recall of Mamadou Sarr from his loan spell at Strasbourg.

Liverpool fans will be pleased to see the club move quickly to take over the contract and secure the availability of one of Europe’s most highly-rated young defenders.

Arne Slott looks like he could sign such a deal in the near future with Virgil van Dijk not getting any younger, while Ibrahima Konate is nearing the end of his contract this summer.
